Glossary of Medical Terminology
T

his Reference Guide provides definitions for some common medicine related terms and terminology many of which are used within this website. The terminology is broken down into the following categories: Cardiovascular: The circulatory system comprising the heart and blood vessels which carries nutrients and oxygen to the tissues of the body and removes carbon dioxide and other wastes from them. Endocrinology: The endocrine system comprises the glands (and certain tissues) that secrete hormones (endocrine glands). The hormones they secrete are like ‘messengers’ that, when released into the blood, travel to distant tissues and organs to elicit specific functions necessary for the organism.

Lipids: Another word for "fats", are an important part of living cells. Together with carbohydrates and proteins, lipids are the main constituents of plant and animal cells.

Metabolism: The whole range of biochemical processes that occur within us (or any living organism). Metabolism consists both of anabolism and catabolism (the buildup and breakdown of substances, respectively). The term is commonly used to refer specifically to the breakdown of food and its transformation into energy.

Medical Measurements: A brief guide to some common medical measurements.
