Researchers have announced, to the joyful ear of many lovers of wine, that the effects of red wine could help to increase our overall health.
The resveratrol found in red wine has been shown to counteract the harmful effects of high-fat diets, fight off medical conditions that could lead to aging and provide heart benefits, including the possible prevention of heart attacks. Even anti-cancer action was presented when resveratol was placed in direct contact with skin tumors or gastrointestinal tract tumors on tested mice.
Although the dose given to the mice far exceeded the amount able to be consumed by any one person by merely drinking wine, in one study, normal mice were turned into athletic super-mice. Pharmacists are researching the ability to put the ingredient in capsule form.
In June 2008, a study found that resveratol was effective at protecting the heart when taken in high doses, but can in middle age in low doses, lead to a healthier heart and overall better quality in old age.
Flavonoids, another presence in red wine, are also thought to protect from cancer because of the antioxidants it contains and melatonin is thought to delay the inflammatory processes and oxidative damage in the aging process.
Some other parts of the long list of illnesses that red wine has shown promise in preventing are diabetes, prostrate cancer, Alzheimers, leukemia, cardiovascular disease, cataracts, decreased bone density, and some common illness that are food-borne.
The sale of wine was increased by 9.5% in 2005, in part because of the new studies of potential medical benefits that have emerged.
